INDividual counseling
Individual Counseling is for those students who might benefit from a school counselor meeting with them on a one-on-one basis. According to the American School Counseling Association (ASCA), part of individual counseling/planning includes coordinating ongoing systemic activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing personal future plans. At the elementary level, this can be anything from goal setting to working with a student who is experiencing the death of a loved one.
School counselors are not mental health professionals. This is important to note because it is appropriate, if necessary, for students to be referred to an outside agency for support that is beyond what the school counselor can provide. However, as a school counselor I can assist parents/guardians with resources for outside agencies that might benefit your student.
Our school is very fortunate to partner with Lutheran Services of Iowa when it comes to referring students on who need further counseling. For more information, contact me at [email protected].
