Small Group Counseling
Small group counseling is a chance to meet with students in a smaller environment where some students might feel more comfortable to open up and share thoughts and feelings. According to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) small groups are considered an aspect of responsive services. This means that the student's concerns are more immediate. These students also usually have a situation in common (i.e. dealing with divorce). This helps the student to relate to one another and support each other.
Small group counseling is solution-focused and brief, meaning it is short-term with the focus to get the students back into the classroom. Students are normally referred to small groups by teachers or other school staff. Parents/guardians of students who are asked to participate in small groups will be given a permission form. No student will be able to participate in a small group without this permission.
